Data Analytics

Qlik continues to push the boundaries of data analytics and visualisation with a host of new features and improvements. From enhanced tables to advanced machine learning capabilities, here’s an overview of the latest updates that make Qlik Cloud an even more powerful platform for developers, analysts, and business users alike.

1. Preview of New Asset Panel

A redesigned asset panel is now in preview mode, featuring new tabs for fields, master items, charts, and more. The improvements include:

  • In-edit mode selections.
  • A histogram view for better data insights.

NOTE: The updated asset panel will roll out globally in January 2025.

2. Revolutionised Navigation and Design

The new navigation menu and tab container offer flexible styling options, letting you design interfaces that suit your brand and user needs. Customise fonts, colours, and layouts for a polished app experience.

3. Improved Visualisations and Containers

Visualisation tools have seen significant improvements:

  • Straight Tables: Support for word-wrapped headers and content.
  • Pivot Tables: Enhanced with range selection.
  • Layout Containers: Now support custom tooltips and allow precise resizing with Shift-click.

4. Public Monitored Charts

Monitored charts can now be shared in managed spaces, enabling streamlined analytics consumption. These charts appear directly on the Insights activity centre homepage, ensuring quick access to critical data for all users within a tenant.

5. PixelPerfect Report Authoring

Qlik Cloud Analytics introduces PixelPerfect report authoring for creating visually stunning reports with pixel-level precision. Whether you need branded designs for corporate reporting or on-demand downloads, PixelPerfect ensures every report aligns with your company’s standards.

6. Table Enhancements

Qlik’s tables have received significant upgrades:

  • Cyclic Dimensions: Both straight and pivot tables now support cyclic dimensions, with a new dropdown for quick field switching.
  • Indicators for Straight Tables: Add icons and colours based on thresholds for any measure, making data interpretation more intuitive.
  • Indent Rows for Pivot Tables: A new compact presentation mode with indented rows is now available, ideal for text-heavy data.

7. Enhanced Scripting with GetUserAttr

The new GetUserAttr function expands the ability to integrate external metadata into apps. Use this function to personalise user experiences by tailoring dimensions, measures, and layouts based on attributes like email domains or user groups. For example:

  • Apply regional language settings for specific domains.
  • Customise layouts for different user personas.

8. Dynamic Variable Dialog Updates

The values displayed in the variable dialog now update dynamically as changes occur in the app, ensuring users have a real-time reflection of their variable manipulations, especially through variable input controls. This simplifies testing and optimisation during app development.

9. Selections Tool for Calculated Dimensions

The selections tool now supports calculated dimensions, making it easier to refine datasets and build insights with advanced filters.

10. Advanced AutoML Monitoring

The integration of monitoring capabilities into AutoML deployments offers a detailed overview of predictions and feature drift. This helps users maintain high-quality machine learning models and optimise predictive performance.

11. Intelligent Model Optimisation Enhancements

AutoML’s intelligent model optimisation now includes advanced anomaly detection and feature engineering. Key updates:

  • Binning continuous features to rebalance data distribution.
  • Applying power transforms to skewed numeric data for improved model training.

12. Qlik Cloud Expands to India

A new Qlik Cloud region in Mumbai supports the growing demand for analytics in India and the broader APAC region. This ensures faster access, regulatory compliance, and enhanced performance for local customers.

13. Mandatory Update for Qlik DataTransfer

A required update for Qlik DataTransfer ensures continuity of on-premises data uploads to Qlik Cloud. The latest version, 10.4.0, replaces the expiring version 10.1.0 and includes critical fixes.

Data Integration

Qlik Talend Cloud continues to enhance its data integration platform with significant updates this month. They include advanced schema evolution capabilities that adapt to changing data sources, expanded data quality computation for various file formats, sophisticated GitHub-powered version control for collaborative development, and improvements to ensure more flexible, reliable, and efficient data management workflows.

1. Version Control with GitHub

With GitHub version control in this update to Qlik Talend Cloud (Standard edition and above) Qlik has empowered development teams to collaborate more effectively and manage project changes. The key benefits to this update include ability to work concurrently on different project aspects, focus on feature development using branching strategies, and prevent unintended changes to the main project branch.

Conflicts can be avoided using customisable schema prefixes for each branch. As you would expect with robust version control, changes can be synchronised with remote repositories as well as the ability to use commit and push code modifications.

Version control allows teams to collaborate efficiently, minimise development conflicts, maintain pipeline integrity, and ensure code quality through peer review.

This update is also available in Qlik Cloud for Government.

2. Extended Data Quality Computation for QVDs

This update to Qlik’s data quality capabilities introduces ’pull-up’ mode computation for QVDs (’pull-up’ mode refers to a method where data quality checks are performed on the client-side or application layer) as well as expanding data quality profiling across multiple data sources.

It also includes SQL databases (pull-up computation for registered datasets), File based sources (QVDs, CSV, Excel files), and of course continued support for Snowflake datasets (push-down computations).

As well as ensuring quality across diverse sources, this comprehensive update will help improve consistency and trust in your data.

3. Schema Evolution Improvements

Qlik Talend Cloud has expanded its schema evolution capabilities, providing a more flexible and intelligent approach to handling structural changes in data pipelines.

Schema evolution support has been extended to the following areas: Data Lake landing tasks and Pipeline projects for landing storage tasks.

This is a huge benefit if you are encountering constantly changing source databases. If new columns are added or data types were modified previously, these changes would require manual intervention and have the potential to break your ETL process and cause downtime. Qlik Talend Cloud now automatically detects and adapts to this ’schema drift’.

To keep your data team proactively informed, this update also includes an enhancement to the notification system for schema changes.

This is a strong update gives a more adaptive data integration environment which will result in higher resilience.

4. Required update of Qlik DataTransfer

There is a new version of Qlik DataTransfer available, November 2024 (version 10.4.0). Please be aware, to continue uploading data from on-prem data sources to your cloud tenant you must make the up before November 28, 2024. After which, the current version (version 10.1.0) will stop working.

Upgrade instructions are available here.

Summary

Qlik’s updates deliver innovations across analytics, machine learning, and app customisation. With a focus on user-centric features, Qlik empowers organisations to create tailored experiences while driving deeper insights from their data. Whether you’re leveraging advanced scripting, enhancing visualisations, or exploring machine learning, these updates ensure you will remain at the forefront of analytics innovation.
